The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is facing further internal tremors as two prominent Senators from Osun State, Senator Francis Adenigba Fadahunsi OFR (Osun East) and Senator Olublyi Oluwole Fadeyi (Osun Central), have announced their immediate resignation from the party. Both lawmakers cited “irreconcilable differences” and “irreparable divisions” stemming from protracted legal battles at the national level since the 2023 general elections.
In separate but similarly worded letters addressed to their respective Ward Chairmen, the Senators expressed their dissatisfaction with the persistent internal strife plaguing the opposition party.
Senator Francis Adenigba Fadahunsi, a two-term Senator representing Osun East Senatorial District, stated in his letter dated June 12, 2025: “I wish to formally notify you that I am resigning my Membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with immediate effect, due to the irreparable, irreconcilable differences and protracted legal battles that have bedeviled the party at the National level after the 2023 general elections.” He further added that this decision was reached after extensive consultation with his political associates, family, and friends.
Similarly, Senator Olublyi Oluwole Fadeyi, representing Osun Central Senatorial District, echoed these sentiments in his resignation letter. While the specific date of his letter was not immediately disclosed, its content mirrored Fadahunsi’s, emphasizing the “irreconcilable difference and irreparable division that have emerged and court cases and counter court cases in the last 3 years which has created faction in the party at the National level.” He also confirmed that his decision followed consultations with his political circle.
The resignations underscore the ongoing challenges faced by the PDP, which has been grappling with leadership disputes and legal entanglements in the aftermath of the last general elections. The departure of these two senators from Osun, a key South-West state, could further weaken the party’s legislative caucus and its overall standing ahead of future elections.
Neither Senator Fadahunsi nor Senator Fadeyi immediately disclosed their next political destination. Their move comes amidst a series of defections from the PDP, with other prominent figures, including former Senate President David Mark, having recently left the party citing similar reasons of internal disunity.
The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has seen its ranks in the Senate swell recently due to such defections, further solidifying its majority.
