The Executive Governor of Oyo State, Engr. Seyi Makinde, FNSE, has ordered a fresh selection process for filling of the vacant stool of Onikoyi of Ikoyi-Ile. The stool has been vacant since April 7, 2022 after the demise of Oba Abdulyekeen Ayinla Oladipupo IV.
In a letter dated 16th October 2026 and signed on behalf of the Executive Chairman of Oriire Local Government by one William Jare Idowu JP, the council Chairman notified the prominent Ruling Houses in Ikoyi-Ile on the directive of His Excellency, Engr. Seyi Makinde, FNSE that the administrative process for filling the vacant stool of Onikoyi of Ikoyi-Ile be commenced afresh and made all-inclusive.
With this new development, all ruling houses in Ikoyi-Ile will be expected to immediately put forward their various qualified candidates for the prominent ancient Stool. The all-inclusivity of the process is due to the absence of a certified Oyo State Government Gazette for the Onikoyi Chieftaincy.
Customarily, there are 4 major ruling in Ikoyi-Ile, these are the Oladipupo, Adegun, Adesite and Ojo Atoyebi Ruling Houses. So far, about 6 candidates from 3 of the prominent ruling houses have signified intention to join the selection process.
The mood in Ikoyi-Ile have been celebratory since the news broke out last week as youths and elders have commended the Governor of Oyo State for giving the Onikoyi Stool the deserved attention. They all cannot wait to have a new Onikoyi on the throne of the ancient town.
