Oyo school alumnus splashes N1m awards on best students, staff to counter ‘education is scam’ narrative

In a bid to promote academic excellence and reward hard work, an alumnus of Abiodun Atiba Memorial Institute, Oyo, Mr. Babatunde Tijani (aka TJ) has awarded the sum of N1 million to four outstanding graduating students and the staff of the school during the institution’s 44th valedictory service and prize-giving day.

Tijani, who was the Special Guest of Honour at the event, announced cash prizes of N200,000 each to the best students in Science, Arts, and Commerce, as well as the overall best graduating student. He also extended a similar sum to the school staff as a token of appreciation for their efforts in grooming the students.

“In memory of my late father, Chief Abdul-Lateef Eyitayo Tijani, who served as vice principal of this great institution from 1981 to 1988, and as my humble contribution to the school, I am delighted to award N200,000 each to the best students in Science, Arts and Commerce.

“Additionally, the overall valedictorian will receive N200,000. I am also pleased to gift the principal and teachers of Abiodun Atiba Memorial Institute the sum of N200,000 as a token of appreciation for their tireless efforts in shaping future leaders,” he said.

Tijani, represented at the ceremony by his sister, Ms. Omobola Tijani, urged the graduating students to remain focused and committed as they progress in their academic journey.

“Congratulations to the graduating class of 2025. Remain steadfast, patriotic, and always remember the children of whom you are. As you move forward, stay curious, be resilient, and pursue your passions with purpose. Go and rule your world, the sky is your starting point,” he charged.

He also paid tribute to his former teachers, noting their influence in shaping his academic and personal development.

“Your dedication and mentorship left a lasting impact on me, and I am grateful for all the lessons learned,” he said.

Tijani had previously donated multimillion Naira projects to the school. They include
renovation of a block of six classrooms, 240 modern tables and desks, installation of a modern borehole, renovation of the school mosque as well as annual sponsorship of TJ BAB’S House during the school inter-house sports competition to promote healthy competition.

In his welcome address, the school principal, Mr. Razak Raheem, praised Tijani for his consistent contributions to the development of the school, particularly in infrastructure and student empowerment.

“He has always shown support, especially during events like this. His impact is constantly felt in this school. May God continue to raise him and enlarge his coast,” the principal said.

Raheem also lauded Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, for creating a conducive atmosphere for educators in the state, and advised the graduating students to avoid social vices and focus on building successful futures.

“Secondary education is only the foundation. You must make tertiary education your next destination. As you go into the world, be good ambassadors of this great school. Shun societal ills like drug abuse, prostitution, cybercrime and all other negative influences.

“I urge you to continue investing in these children—encourage them, support them, provide for them, and most importantly, pray for them. Make whatever sacrifices are necessary to help them fulfil their potential,”
he admonished.

Highlight of the event was the announcement of Memunat Oyetunde as the overall best graduating student. Oyetunde, who also emerged as the best science student, went home with a total sum of N400,000. Faizat Oparemi topped the commercial class and received N200,000, while Jewel Olaoba, the best arts student, was also awarded N200,000.

In her remarks, Oyetunde expressed heartfelt gratitude for the recognition and support, describing it as a great motivation to pursue greater heights.
