As part of efforts by the Seyi Makinde government in fulfillment of one the governor’s campaign promises of making making taking good governance accessible to the people at the grassroots, the state government through Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission (OYSIEC), has continued to intensify efforts to ensure that all registered political parties actively participate in the forthcoming local government elections.
OYSIEC Chairman, Barrister Isiaka Olagunju SAN, had earlier before releasing timetable and guidelines for the coming LG elections, visited various political party secretariats in the state with a view to adequately sensitize and assure all political parties and stakeholders of OYSIEC unbiased position as the electoral umpire and as well as to campaigned against voters apartheid.
Among party secretariats visited by OYSIEC during its sensitization campaign include offices of both ruling party, the PDP and the main opposition party, the APC.
Sunrisebulletin.com recalls that both PDP and APC, during OYSIEC’s visits, had assured of their cooperation provided OYSIEC provides a level playing ground for all political parties and operates within the ambient of the law.
Speaking exclusively with sunrisebulletin.com correspondent, Henry Odeh via phone call, over the readiness of Oyo state chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), towards the forthcoming council elections, the party’s state public relations officer, Dr Azeez Olatunde, explained that his party’s readiness for the elections will be based on two key factors, democracy and rule of law.
Dr Olatunde maintained that APC in Oyo state will participate in the elections only if OYSIEC’s activities are duly guided by the rule of law stressing that his party will not participate in any election exercise outside true democratic process and the rule of law.
Meanwhile, all efforts to get reactions of the state secretary of Zenith Labour Party (ZLP), Mr Bimbo Adepoju for comments were futile as he neither picked up his calls nor respond to text messages sent to his phone line.
However, Engr Akeem Olatunji, the state publicity secretary of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), in his response to his party’s level of preparedness towards the election maintained that PDP across the 33 local government areas are already mobilizing its members for the election.
He added that the governor has made it clear that the council election will not be business as usual stressing that true democracy will not be compromised.
When reacting to possibility of voters apartheid as a due to lack of trust from opposition parties, Olatunji explained that such fears could only be born out of how such exercise was handled in the last eight years of APC administration in the state.
Olatunji, however, dispel all forms of fear born out of lack of trust noting that his party was fully ready for the election and would not hesitate to raise alarm if OYSIEC is seen or perceived to be derailing from the standard it has set for the election and the assurances given to all political parties in the state.
