Oyo Assembly Grills Management Of Oyo Water Corporation, Says People Don’t Have Water Despite Billions Spent By Last Govt
By Henry Odeh
The Oyo State house of assembly today grilled top management of Oyo state Water Corporation Agency over what it described as lack of water supplies to homes across the state despite the billions of naira spent by Ajimobi led administration adding it was totally unacceptable to have spent so much of Oyo state money without any result noting that the present administration is no more about business as usual.
The management of Oyo state water corporation led by the Acting Permanent Secretary and the Acting General Manager posited that 12 out of its 22 waterworks were functioning optimally but the Oyo house of assembly insisted that residents of the State do not have access to drinkable water supply.
The agency made the claims in its report which was submitted to lawmakers during its Tuesday plenary adding that although the corporation is faced with humongous challenges that seemed unabated but despite the odds most of its projects are functioning at not less than 50 to 80% capacity.
According to the seven pages report presented by the Acting Managing Director, Oyo State Water Corporation, Mr. Samuel Adegboyega, waterworks are functioning at 80, 50, 70, 60, and 100 percent at its project sites which include Asejire dam phase 1&2, Eleyele, Oyo, Iseyin Koso, Iseyin Atori, Ogbomoso, Eruwa, Saki, Igbeti, Ago-Amodu, Iganna and Ajinapa.
The Majority Leader of the 9th assembly Hon. Sanjo Adedoyin representing Ogbomoso South state constituency while contributing to the discussion stated that less than two per cent of Ogbomoso zone have access to pipe borne water from the agency adding that he resides in Ogbomoso and could feel every inch of the pain of the people as alluded.
While making reference to the report on the new projects status at the agency, the Speaker of the house, Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin observed that despite the agency’s ineffectiveness, it approved 9 contracts between November 2018 and April 2019, while the immediate past administration was already rounding up and preparing for 2019 general elections.
“From this report, your agency awarded 13 contracts between 2011 and 2019, which is eight years, out to my amazement, nine of this 13 contracts were awarded at the tail end of the last administration.
“These contracts were awarded, and about 1.3billion naira was released within five months to different contractors just towards the tail end of the last administration which is the reason this house has every reason to be suspicious of all contractual transactions between the period under review.
Hon. Olajide Akintunde representing Lagelu state constituency in his submission noted that the disparity between the quoted statistics and project performance as contained in the report is too conflicting and needed clarity which immediately received the support of Hon. Bimbo Olawumi representing Ogbomoso north state constituency who added that some key members of the immediate past administration and all contractors handling Oyo state government projects should be invited to provide clarity to why the state still lacks water supply despite the billions of tax payers money expended by the last administration.
The speaker, Rt. Hon Adebo Ogundoyin, in his remark, stated that there is no justification whatsoever for the sorry state of supply of drinkable water to various homes across the state and the house is resolved to dig to the root of the matter adding that all those involved in the various contracts regarding provision of adequate water supply in the state will be invited to appear before the house very soon.
