NYSC At 50: Oyo Deputy Governor Charges FG To Continue To Make The Scheme Mandatory
The Deputy Governor of Oyo,Bar.Bayo Lawal has admonished the federal government to retain the National Youth Service Corps as a mandatory scheme for graduates of tertiary institutions in Nigeria.
Bar.Lawal made the call in Abuja while speaking at the 50th anniversary celebration of the National Youth Service Corps.
The deputy governor who represented Governor Seyi Makinde at the event, noted that the scheme has to a large extent achieved the objectives of its establishment.
According to him, the scheme came to being to promote unity and cohesion in Nigeria especially after the civil war which fragmented the country.
While expressing satisfaction on the achievements of the scheme in the last five decades,Bar. Lawal warned that any attempt to make the scheme voluntary would rob it of its value.
He hinted that Oyo state was committed to providing conducive environment to corp members posted to the state by paying them reasonable allowances among other things.
Among other incentives according to the deputy governor was the construction of two additional halls at the NYSC permanent orientation camp in Iseyin to accommodate corp members in camp.
He charged all state governor s in Nigeria to attach deserving priority to the welfare of corp members posted to their various states
