Oyo State Governor, ‘Seyi Makinde, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the well-being of workers, assuring that he would continue to prioritise policies that promote safety, economic stability and improved working conditions in the state.
He noted that this commitment is to enable workers to continue to thrive and contribute meaningfully to the development of Oyo State as they have been doing since he assumed office close to seven years ago.
The governor made this known on Friday during the 2026 Workers’ Day Celebration, themed: “Insecurity, Poverty – Bane of Decent Work,” held at the main bowl of the Lekan Salami Sports Complex, Adamasingba, Ibadan.
Makinde, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Musibau Babatunde, noted that the security of lives and property would continue to be a priority for his administration, as it would never allow insecurity to hurt the economic prosperity being enjoyed in the state.
Speaking on the theme for the year, Governor Makinde explained that insecurity remains a major threat to productivity, stressing that no meaningful development can take place in an unsafe environment.
The governor explained that his government has invested heavily on security across the state, deploying measures that centre on grassroots vigilance, with the introduction of the Amotekun Corps, and strengthening inter-agency collaboration to safeguard lives and property of the citizens.
He added that these investments in the security sector have also been made in the areas of equipment, technological support for rapid response, and coordinated operations involving the police, military and other security agencies across the length and breadth of the state.
He appreciated the state’s workforce for the outstanding roles they have played in his administration’s success in the security sector and other areas.
On the welfare of Oyo State workers, the governor disclosed that his administration started the payment of N10,000 transport subsidy to workers and pensioners to cushion the effects of rising fuel prices linked to global tensions.
He highlighted other ongoing support initiatives including housing and car loans, as well as reforms to digitalise the public service in order to improve efficiency, transparency, and overall productivity.
Earlier in their separate addresses, the Chairman, Nigeria Labour Congress, Comrade Kayode Martins and his counterpart, Chairman, Trade Union Congress, Comrade Bosun Olabiyi-Agoro lamented the pains and struggles of Nigerians amidst growing economic hardship, urging the Federal Government to formalise crude subsidy to modular refiners as a cushioning effect.
The union leaders commended the state government for maintaining relative industrial harmony, but called for more action on wage adjustments, pensions, and the rising cost of living.
They added that many workers still face economic pressure amid inflation and called for policies that reflect current realities.
Also in their various fraternal messages, the Aseyin of Iseyin, Oba Sefiu Oyebola; and the Labour Comptroller, Federal Ministry of Labour, represented by Engr Oluyemi Olumide, urged workers in the state to remain steadfast and continue to work for the greater good of the nation.
The event featured colourful parades by various unions, cultural displays, and solidarity marches, reflecting both the resilience and unity of the workforce in Oyo State.
The event had in attendance, the Head of Service, Mrs Olubunmi Oni, mni; Commissioners, and Permanent Secretaries, among other top government functionaries.
