Southwest’s Powerhouse: How Oyo Is Reclaiming Its Place In Nigeria’s Economic Map | Deji Ola

Once celebrated as the intellectual and political heartbeat of the Southwest, Oyo State is now scripting a new chapter—not built on nostalgia, but on measurable economic revival. At the center of this resurgence is Governor Seyi Makinde, whose focused leadership is transforming Oyo into an economic force with national relevance. In a political climate often saturated with noise, theatrics, and public relations overdrive, Governor Makinde has taken a different path, choosing strategy over spectacle and prioritizing sustainable growth over short-term optics.

Since assuming office in 2019, he has steadily built a reputation for leadership rooted in discipline, delivery, and a results-driven mindset. Rather than amplifying his voice through constant political commentary, he has allowed the work to speak for itself, making his administration synonymous with visibility, verifiability, and value-added governance. This rare leadership is powerfully positioning Pacesetter State as a model for modern, subnational progress in Nigeria.

Oyo state, once known for its towering political relevance and educational legacy, had seen its influence wane over the years, with other states pulling ahead in infrastructure, commerce, and innovation. But Governor Makinde has positively changed the narrative, not by dwelling on past glories, but by redefining what the future can and should look like.

Over the past six years, the results have become increasingly hard to ignore, as Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) significantly increased without placing undue tax burdens on the population. At the same time, investment inflows have surged, with Oyo now consistently appearing on key investor watchlists both nationally and internationally. The establishment and efficiency of the Oyo State Investment and Public-Private Partnership Agency (OYSIPA) has also played a pivotal role, making it easier for investors to do business and catalyzing several partnerships that are gradually reshaping the state’s economic architecture.

While Oyo’s geographical advantage has always been clear, lying strategically between Lagos and the Northern corridor, it is Governor Makinde’s proactive and visionary leadership that has turned that natural positioning into real opportunity, unlocking economic potential through infrastructure development and economic integration.

As Lagos continues to contend with congestion, cost pressures, and urban sprawl, Oyo is emerging as a strategic alternative, offering lower overheads, modern infrastructure, a skilled workforce, and a governance structure that supports innovation and long-term planning, thereby easing regional imbalances in economic growth.

What is even more remarkable is that Oyo’s resurgence is not driven by showmanship but by systems, not by slogans but by structure, and not by noise but by numbers. This isn’t just a state catching up; it’s a state actively repositioning itself as a standard for what competent, forward-thinking governance should look like in 21st-century Nigeria.

Governor Makinde’s leadership is showing that it is possible to lead without fanfare, to serve without seeking applause, and to govern with the people—not just in mind, but at the center of every decision, every policy, and every plan for the future. From every kilometer of road to every youth empowered, from every opportunities and low hanging fruits to every investment secured, Oyo state is telling a story of renewal—not only of the state’s economy, but also of trust in leadership.

This is not politics as usual; it is leadership with purpose, planning with precision, and execution with integrity. And as Nigeria looks to subnational governments for innovation, resilience, and growth, Oyo State under Governor Seyi Makinde is proving that the future does not belong to the loudest, it belongs to those who deliver.
