The national assembly is committed to strengthening Nigeria’s digital governance architecture.

Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Digital, Information Communication Technology and Cybersecurity, Hon. Adedeji Dhikrullahi Stanley Olajide stated this in Abuja, when he led members of his committee on an oversight visit to the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA).

Olajide, who represents Ibadan North-west/Ibadan South-west federal constituency of Oyo state at the national assembly, said the visit was in line with the constitutional mandate of the national assembly to ensure accountability, transparency and effective implementation of laws guiding the country’s digital economy.

Addressing the management of NITDA during the visit, the lawmaker stated that Nigeria’s rapid digital transformation requires a proactive regulatory environment capable of protecting national infrastructure, promoting innovation and safeguarding citizens against emerging cyber threats.

According to him, the oversight exercise was not merely procedural but a strategic engagement aimed at reviewing the agency’s performance, assessing policy implementation and identifying areas requiring legislative support.

“NITDA occupies a critical position in Nigeria’s digital ecosystem. As lawmakers, our responsibility is to ensure that the legal and regulatory frameworks are effectively implemented and aligned with global best practices,” Olajide said.

He emphasized the importance of strengthening cybersecurity infrastructure, improving on digital literacy programmes and expanding broadband penetration to underserved communities, noting that inclusive access remains central to Nigeria’s digital outreach.

Olajide also reiterated the need for enhanced collaboration between NITDA and other relevant institutions to address cybercrime, data protection concerns and emerging technological risks.

The committee chairman further called for sustained capacity building within the agency to keep pace with global technological advancement, stressing that Nigeria must not lag behind in the evolving digital economy.

He assured NITDA of the committee’s readiness to provide necessary legislative backing to improve operational efficiency, close regulatory gaps and ensure effective utilization of budgetary allocation.
