Oyo Govt. Insists: The Shanties Must Go

His Excellency, the Deputy Governor of Oyo State, Chief Bayo Lawal (Esq.), today convened a crucial meeting with leaders of the Hausa community in Sabo-Jemibewon and the Oyo State Rule of Law Enforcement Authority (OYRLEA). The meeting was in response to the community’s appeal for an extension on the planned demolition of shanties and illegal structures around St. Gabriel’s School, Jemibewon, Ibadan.

The request for an extension followed an on-the-spot inspection of the affected area by the Chairperson of OYRLEA, Hon. Justice Aderonke A. Aderemi (Rtd.), alongside the enforcement team, during which structures were marked for demolition.

Final Resolution: Deadline Set for April 10

The Deputy Governor emphasized that the shanties must go in line with the state’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring a safe and conducive environment for learning.

In a plea led by the Seriki n Sabo, the Hausa community requested an extension until the end of Ramadan to enable them to vacate the area voluntarily. The state government, after due consideration, granted the request, setting April 10, 2025, as the final deadline. By April 11, 2025, full demolition will commence on any remaining illegal structures.

Government’s Stand on Education and Safety

The Commissioner for Education, Science, and Technology urged the community to comply with state regulations, emphasizing that the decision was made in the best interest of schoolchildren. He stressed the need to eliminate vices and safeguard students’ security, citing similar actions taken at St. Anne’s School and other affected schools in Apete.

At the close of discussions, all parties signed a written agreement in the presence of the Deputy Governor Barr. Bayo Lawal, Hon. Justice Aderemi (Rtd.), and the Commissioner for Education Prof Soliu Adelabu, reaffirming the government’s resolve to enforce the law while allowing a humane transition period.
