The Acting Governor of Oyo State, Barrister Abdul Raheem Adebayo Lawal, joined a host of distinguished personalities at the Supreme Court today to honor the retirement of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kayode Ariwoola. The valedictory court session marked the end of a remarkable career on the bench for Justice Ariwoola.
The event was attended by three other governors, serving and retired justices from various levels of the judiciary, members of both the inner and outer bar, traditional rulers, and religious leaders, all of whom came to pay their respects to the retiring Chief Justice.
In his valedictory speech, Justice Ariwoola reflected on his life’s journey, describing it as eventful and fulfilling. He emphasized the numerous reforms he implemented to enhance the judiciary during his tenure. Justice Ariwoola also advocated for better remuneration for judicial officers, particularly highlighting the plight of retired judges. He stressed that judges who are constitutionally barred from returning to legal practice after retirement should be adequately compensated and not forced to beg for their entitlements.
Justice Ariwoola expressed hope that the progress being made with the passage of the bill to prescribe salaries, allowances, and fringe benefits for judicial office holders in Nigeria would significantly address these concerns.
He concluded his speech by expressing gratitude to Almighty Allah, the Governor of Oyo State, Engineer Seyi Makinde, his family members, and all well-wishers who contributed to his successful career.
